I'm not shamed to admit that I pride myself on my gift wrapping.
A theory of mine: A well wrapped present is either (generally) opened first or last.

If its a great present - opened first; it sets the benchmark. Its the present that every other one will be compared too, competing against if you will.
opened last; it trumps all others. it steals the show, takes the limelight and will be topic of discussion for the next five minutes odd, ten if your lucky.
If it is a poor present- opened first- its forgotten by the end. By the time the rest of the presents have been open, interest has faded, wine (has usually) flowed, chatter has emerged, no one will really remember or care to remember for that matter.
opened last- by that stage no one cares.
