M.I.A

Once again I have been successful in being MIA for a substantial period of time. That said, I have been writing (in notebooks and on scraps of paper) but am yet to upload those ideas onto you dear readers.

Sadly, there is nothing new to report in my life. Nothing of interest anyway. I have started an exercise routine and have not bought a block of chocolate in nearly two months which truth be told surprises me.

One thing I have been doing though is completing the Fall Challenges set out by Joanna Goddard on her blog A Cup of Jo.
Each week of fall she has issued a challenge (admittedly rather simple) for her readers to follow and then a week later everyone reports back with their stories.

Week One challenged you to go a week without television- something relatively easy for me considering I do not own one.

Week Two asked readers to memorise a poem. Something I had never done before but will definitely continue to do more of. I chose to learn Rudy Francisco's Love Poem. I originally happened across the poem's transcript and immediately connected to it. I loved that it spoke of love, used puns and relatively bizarre metaphors that had complete relevance to me. I was instantly smitten and that was before I discovered it was spoken word and just fell completely head over heels. The debater/public speaker within me that had never heard of spoken word poetry was amazed (and still is)!

Two of my favourite lines;

1. "How I love you the same way I learned how to ride a bike, scared but wreckless. With no training wheels or elbow pads so my scars can tell the story of how I fell for you. "

2. "If you were here right now, I would massage your back until your skin sings songs your lips don't even know the words to, until your heartbeat sounds like my last name and you smile like the pacific ocean."

This week, Joanna has encouraged readers to eat something new- something you have never eaten before.
The first thing that came to mind for me is grapefruit. I have never tried grapefruit and my neighbour has a tree that has just come into season- I will ask him this week to try a grapefruit.
The second idea was to try a combination my British Dad grew up with. Dark fruit cake and cheese. Specifically Red Leciester if you can get it.
Even though America still has Halloween and Thanksgiving to celebrate, Australia is well and truly prepared for Christmas- I have a feeling that a homemade caramelised, boozy Christmas Cake topped with cheese (I'm thinking a softer variety of brie or my favourite Camembert) would be absolutely amazing.

The thing I have loved about these challenges is that it is a constant reminder to celebrate the little things in life.
Take the chance to learn something new or try something new or to stop and take a second to celebrate all we do have.

I hope everyone has a wonderfully challenging week.

x
