Shamefully I am an electronic newspaper reader. My family doesn't buy the papers daily with the exception of Sunday & secretly I rather look forward to reading the paper with afternoon tea each Sunday. The thing I look forward too most (and always read first) is the 'Can't Live Without' page of the Sunday Magazine. Each week it profiles someone (usually a B/C grade celeb) and asks them to list the 10 things they can't live without.
Each week there seems to be a a few select reoccurers (chocolate/family & friends) but I am always interested to see what people pick & why.
This week the list consisted of 1.running 2. peanut butter 3. wire bicycle 4. yoga 5. A Suitable Boy 6. the local park 7. Akubra 8. Photo of father 9. hiking boots 10. tennis.
Last weeks included 1. music 2. chocolate 3. candles 4. sport 5. skipping rope 6. oroton handbag 7. beauty products 8. cooking 9. my brother 10. diary BONUS 11. sushi
I think you can tell a lot about a person from their lists be it specific or general, sentimental or not. Each week as I read I wonder what I would list & each week it changes but for now I think it would go along the lines of:
1. stationery: it could be because of all the years of back to school sales but i still love it, the basics the fancy envelopes you never use, greeting card for all occasions. Love it!
2. perfume: I used to wear a stereotypically teenager scent but they discontinued it which lead me to Tresor in Love. My mum wears Tresor (normally I hate it but it smells wonderful on her) so each morning when I put it on it reminds me of her and her philosophy "there is no excuse for smelling bad".
3. wooden vase: my dad is a wood turner by trade so most of the furniture in our house has been made by him, beds, cabinets tables you name it. My favourite of his pieces though is a simple vase. There is a now closed animal shelter across the road from our house. When they closed it down the original pillars were going to be thrown away. My dad turned them into these beautiful vases. I love the idea that he gave new life to this piece of wood like an animal shelter does to animals. Plus having left the exterior weathered, it acts as a constant reminder that beauty is so far from skin deep.
4. sick jumpy: truth be told is a hideous fire engine red sloppy joe, but somehow has the magical ability like those travelling pants to fit anyone who wears it and always offers the warmth and comfort needed to make you feel better. It is reserved (and has been since mum was pregnant with us) for those days when you feel miserable and chilled to the bone.
5. vegemite: stereotypically Australian I know but I eat this stuff daily (and am the only one in my family that can stand it). From Kindergarten through to my High School Graduation, every day I took a vegemite sandwich, nowadays its breakfast material. Its something you either love or hate.
6. toothbrush: preloaded with toothpaste I carry one of these bad boys with me daily. I have one in my handbag, car, gym bag & at work. I think it was years of braces that has made be paranoid about bad breath & tooth decay but I hate nothing more than the feeling of dirty teeth plus spinach in your teeth is never a pleasant look.
I can't really decide on the rest. It would be a toss up between 1. Brown Brothers Dolcetto & Syriah (an Australian red wine that is sparkling and served chilled. I love that it goes against every red wine rule, it is one of few wines I genuinely enjoy + everyone I have introduced it to has instantly fallen in love) 2. Frankie Magazine, 3. Photos/Cameras, 4. Records, 5. Autobiographies, 6. Makeup 7. Lemons, 8. a firebox 9. ugg boots 10. cocktail rings 11. Lucas paw paw ointment 12. dancing honestly the list could just go on and on and on and on.
What would you list as the things you couldn't (wouldn't want to) live without?
