Coffee

It could just be me, being slightly paranoid but I find the whole process of ordering take-away coffee quite awkward.

First, because I am a drinker of Tea or Hot Chocolate more so than coffee, I feel like those around me perceive me to be 5 years old whenever I order my small hot chocolate in amongst the grand slim double shot chai lattes.

This fact does however support my theory that you can tell quite a lot about people by the coffee they order. The straight blacks, the latte drinkers, the fans of tea can all be distinctly grouped if you think about it by age or gender or occupation.

As a consequence, I think Barista's think oh Hot Chocolate, not really a serious drink of choice, they wont mind if i make them wait 20 minutes and serve literally 15 other people first, 10 of whom placed orders after the ho cho. But here is where it gets awkward. Most places will take a name and match it to the order to save awkward debates about who came first ( like the ticketing system at most delis). My university however does not employ such a system but relies on honesty and will simply announce what the drink is. It is ok for those grand, soy or extra shot kinda folk but when you have 20 people waiting in line calling out 'regular flat white' is guaranteed to be problematic! Not only is that too many people to actually form a comprehensible line, it is 7am and most of those waiting are relying on the caffeine that awaits them to push their brains into gear. You find yourself questioning was that girl before or after me? and hence can be waiting for quite some time.

Oh, The drama of it all.

  1. I love ordering hot chocolate even if I usually get a black coffee or carmel machiatto (hmmm, what does that say about me). However there is something special and soothing about a hot chocolate that out ranks coffee for me. Especially on those cold winter days.

  2. I couldn't agree more! I find Hot Chocolates particularly comforting on the days I have somehow managed to end up with wet socks!
