Traditional Christmas food- stereotypically is Turkey, Plum Pudding with Custard and Gingerbread among others. Because of the weather here, we do not need food to keep us warm and so my family's traditional Christmas food is quite different.
Leg Ham is a must- something we have had every year since I can remember- it tastes just that much better at Christmas time. The one year Turkey was attempted by my Sister's then boyfriend, he undercooked the Turkey and then midway through his attempt to re-cook it the power went out. In the madness of the holiday season it wasn't until New Years when we visited again and couldn't source that odd smell that we discovered the Turkey still in the over, still undercooked. Hence turkey is not a meat I am particularly fond of.
Desert Wise, the pudding is replaced by Mango Trifle. Mango is one of the few fruits literally fought over in my family so this trifle has been a Christmas staple for quite some time now. Its practically layers of mango, Cointreau, custard and cream. I'm not a huge fan but every year it is devoured.
Snack Wise, the gingerbread is replaced by chips and dips. My Mum makes this spinach dip that Im pretty sure would be something I could happily live on. Its one of those things that only gets better throughout the course of the day and is served in a hollowed out cob that is then broken and eaten with the dip. It is amazing. So simple but amazing.
It is interesting to see how Christmas dinner/lunch differs so much family to family. Im lucky we dont have to trot off to four different houses throughout the day we all just get together at one house for a late lunch/ early dinner / afternoon graze that is usually a free for all buffet style. It works well for us and always has. Other families I know (my neighbours in fact) still have the traditional sit down lunch in forty degree heat- kudos to them. What is your traditional Christmas lunch? What do you look forward too most- Id love to hear?
